Tenby to Valleyfield Top

Leg 2 of the project - about 3 miles which I walked last Saturday while I was still stiff and grumpy from the first big effort. I had company this time, in the shape of Bob, who was at his most merciless in compelling me to get back out there again. Memories of my first riding instructor, over 50 years ago, telling me get back on the pony straight away or I'd never succeed.

We started from bustling Tenby, where the bit of South Beach just by the ice cream van was full of people having sandy fun but, before long, we more or less had that massive expanse of yellow sand to ourselves. There were a couple of kite surfers having a magnificent time out in the stiff breeze and the occasional pair of walkers, but it was a big contrast to the busy-ness of the town.

I'd forgotten my camera, so just had my phone to record the trip, and that's a pretty useless camera. So I've cheated by including a couple of pictures from the walk last Thursday.

The walk was not strenuous and we had good views across to Caldey Island and its semi-detached partner, St Margaret's Island. I'm ashamed to say I have lived in Pembrokeshire for over 30 years and never made the trip to Caldey. It is home to a Cistercian Abbey - the white brothers, as at Hendy Gwyn ar Dâf / Whitland. With suitable resolution made to get over to the island some time this summer, we made our way down from Valleyfield Top, which is on the Penally Army Range beyond Giltar Point, past some rather shorn sheep and back to Penally village to the car.
